If you cannot afford the full course fee you are encouraged to apply for a grant. These are limited in number, though we offer grants to around 20% of students, and are offered on a ‘first come first served’ basis. The maximum grant which you may apply for is £300 although in exceptional circumstances we may be able to give more.
The Arvon Foundation aims to provide as many grants as possible to those who need them to attend our writing courses. However, Arvon can only offer one grant per person in any given year and priority is given to those who have not applied for a grant before. You must clearly demonstrate your financial need and explain the benefits you hope to obtain from your participation on the course.
Please only apply if you would be unable to attend the course without a grant. To help us support as many people as possible, please apply only for the amount you need. It is a requirement of the grant that a written report is completed after the course telling us the benefits you gained and what the course meant to you. This is essential to ensure the future of our grants scheme.
Arvon supports the professional development of practising teachers.
Teachers of English literature and language (and others, please check with the centre) may apply for a special grant of £120 towards the full cost. This can be in addition to the usual grant, if you require financial assistance. Teachers’ grants are limited in number.
To Apply for a Grant by post
1. First complete the booking form to reserve your place on the course.
2. Complete the grant application section of the booking form.
3. Explain fully in a letter how much grant support you need and why. Tell us what you hope to gain from doing the course.
4. Please send photocopies of documents that support your application for a grant.
5. Send both completed forms, the letter (with photocopied documents) and the course deposit to the centre offering the course you wish to attend. If you cannot afford the full deposit please contact the appropriate centre.
